SUPPORT A MANIPUR STUDENT

“A Program towards an Educational Support for a Manipur Student”

INTRODUCTION

Madras Christian College (MCC) has a rich history of fostering academic excellence and nurturing bright minds. The Alumni and Development Office (A&DO) at MCC plays a crucial role in building connections between past graduates and the institution, creating opportunities for alumni engagement, and supporting current students through various initiatives.

Manipur, located in the northeastern part of India, is home to a diverse population with a rich cultural heritage. Despite its natural beauty and cultural wealth, the region faces significant economic and educational challenges. Many students in Manipur struggle to access quality education due to financial constraints, limited infrastructure, and socio-political instability.

Recent unrest in Manipur has exacerbated these challenges, leaving many students unable to continue their education. The "Support a Manipur Student" program by MCC aims to address this critical issue by providing scholarships to economically disadvantaged students from Manipur, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams.

This scholarship program is crucial as it not only supports individual students but also contributes to the broader goal of educational equity. By investing in the education of Manipur students, we help build a more educated and empowered community, fostering social and economic development in the region.

The scholarship program ultimately aims to bridge this gap by providing financial assistance to talented students of Manipur, enabling them to achieve their academic goals and secure a brighter future. Contributions from alumni and donors are critical to the sustainability and expansion of this program, ensuring that no deserving student is left behind due to financial limitations.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Clear identification of the need or problem

Manipur students face significant barriers to higher education due to financial difficulties and the socio-political environment. These barriers prevent many talented and deserving students from accessing quality education.

Statistics or data supporting the problem's existence

According to recent data, the dropout rate in higher education institutions among students from northeastern India is alarmingly high. Financial instability, exacerbated by the recent unrest, has left many families unable to support their children's education.

Impact of the problem on individuals or the community

The lack of educational opportunities perpetuates a cycle of poverty and limits the potential for socio-economic mobility. This not only affects individual students but also hinders the overall progress of the community, leaving Manipur at a disadvantage compared to other regions.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The "Support a Manipur Student" program at MCC aims to provide comprehensive support to 10 students annually. This includes covering tuition fees, accommodation, and food expenses, amounting to Rs 1,40,000 per student per year.

Timeline for Implementation

  • Selection of Students - Annually in June

  • Scholarship Disbursement - Beginning of the academic year in July

  • Monitoring and Support - Throughout the academic year with periodic assessments

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

  • To provide financial assistance to deserving students at MCC, targeting at least a minimum of 50 students annually.

  • To ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students' academic progress and facilitate academic and professional success for all scholarship recipients.

METHODOLOGY

By providing financial assistance, the program will remove the primary barrier to education for deserving students, allowing them to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.

  • Student Selection - Based on academic merit and financial need

  • Scholarship Disbursement - Direct payment of tuition and accommodation fees to MCC

  • Ongoing Support - Regular mentoring and academic guidance

IMPACT

  • Sustainable Educational Opportunities

The scholarship fund ensures the sustainability of educational opportunities for students from Manipur. By securing and allocating funds specifically for scholarships, the program creates a stable financial resource that students can rely on annually. This long-term financial planning guarantees that the scholarship can support multiple cohorts of students, enabling continuous access to higher education for those in need.

  • Increased Donor Engagement and Trust

A well-structured and impactful scholarship program enhances donor engagement and trust. Donors are more likely to contribute when they see tangible, positive outcomes from their contributions. Transparent reporting on the use of funds and the success stories of scholarship recipients can further build trust and encourage ongoing and increased donations. This cyclical relationship between successful outcomes and donor contributions helps to expand the scholarship fund over time.

  • Amplified Reach and Impact

With a robust scholarship fund, the program can support a larger number of students each year. As the fund grows, the capacity to assist more students increases, thereby amplifying the overall impact of the project. This scalability allows the scholarship program to broaden its reach, potentially covering more educational expenses or expanding to support additional educational needs, such as books, technology, and extracurricular activities, thus enhancing the overall educational experience for the recipients.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

Plan for assessing the progress and impact of the project

  • Regular progress reports from scholarship recipients.

  • Annual reviews of academic performance and retention rates.

Indicators to track success

  • Number of scholarships awarded.

  • Academic achievements of recipients.

  • Graduation and employment rates of scholarship recipients.

Evaluation methods

  • Surveys and feedback from recipients.

  • Data analysis of academic and career outcomes.

  • Regular meetings with mentors and advisors to track progress and address any challenges.
