Mithra G. Augustine (1929–2025) was a renowned zoologist and the 14th principal of Madras Christian College (MCC) in Chennai, having served from 1981 to 1989. He passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 95. He has significantly contributed to the institution, particularly in the Archives and the Social Work Department. During his tenure as principal, he played a pivotal role in establishing the college archives as a special unit under the supervision of an archivist when the Miller Memorial Library was shifted to the new premises in 1982. This initiative significantly enhanced the preservation and accessibility of the college's historical records.

Dr. Augustine maintained a strong connection with the Social Work Department of the college. In September 2023, he formally inaugurated an endowment in honor of Dr. Alexander Mantramurti, the former Head of the Department and Principal. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Mr. P. W. C. Davidar, I.A.S (Retd.), former Additional Chief Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, Dr. Augustine has been associated with Dr. Chandran D.S. Devanesan and Dr. Mithra G. Augustine Endowment Lecture. These initiatives underscore Dr. Augustine's ongoing commitment to the Social Work Department at MCC, reflecting his dedication to fostering academic excellence and supporting the department's growth.

Moreover, Dr. Augustine also contributed to the academic literature by authoring "History and Hopes of CLLTs," published by the World Council of Churches in 1999. His contributions to education and research have left a lasting impact on the academic community, particularly at Madras Christian College. Dr. Augustine’s legacy will continue to influence the academic and administrative spheres of Madras Christian College, reflecting his commitment to education and institutional development.

Long Live MCC
